2012 Shore to Shore Stand Up Paddleboard and Prone Paddleboard Race Reports And Results

The 2012 Shore to Shore SUP race fired off in spectacular fashion this past Saturday June 16th with a fleet of Prone and Stand Up Paddleboards, kayaks, and even an Outrigger Canoe taking to the ocean to race.

Under glorious blue skies and bright warm sunshine the paddlers gathered at Bolinas's Brighton Beach for some racing action. Livewater Surf Shop's Pete and Brenna Gubbins went all in once again putting on a top notch event. Marin County Surfrider's Scott Tye also dug deep to make the event super successful. Whether pounding the pavement to raise sponsor dollars, playing Race Committee Head, helping with overall event organization, or more importantly shucking 1000 oysters (thanks Hog Island Oyster Company for the donated Oysters!) Scott & Surfrider delivered! This year's event, the fifth annual, once again benefited the Stinson Beach Junior Lifeguards and 101 Surf Sports was were proud to be part of the sponsors who helped make it happen.

As the paddlers gathered for their heat starts two course choices were on the menu. First up the short course (pictured below) racers who stormed off Brighton Beach to a buoy about 200 yards off shore. A left turn at that buoy sent the fleet on a downhill run to a buoy just off the Stinson Beach Main Lifeguard tower. One more left turn and through a 1-3ft shorebreak to the finish line.

Long course (pictured below) paddlers added some extra distance on the turning marks to round out what was about a 4.5 mile course.

The weather simply could not have been more ideal. With water about as flat as it gets for the area and the near absence of wind accompanied by balmy 70 degree temperatures the scene was a bit more Hawaii-like then Bolinas. The 1-3 ft. surf was also quite accommodating. Particularly at the Stinson Beach finish line where riding a close out wave on a 12'6" race board can be quite a humbling way to finish up.

Stand Up Paddleboarding in the waters off Bolinas is a true treat for any paddler. Doing it with 87 of your friends only makes it better. Add cold beer, incredible weather, fresh oysters, bottomless bbq, and doing it the name of helping the Stinson Junior Lifeguards and you have one epic 2012 Shore to Shore Paddleboarding event.
