Free Stand Up Paddling Demo Day and Surf Movie Viewing with Surf Legend Ian “Kanga” Cairns
101 Surf Sports is proud to announce a special event featuring Australia Surfing Legend Ian "Kanga" Cairns". Come join us on the weekend of Saturday January the 28th and Sunday the 29th at our San Rafael location on 115 3rd Street for a totally free 2 day event. Ian Cairns is a living legend in the world of surfing. Ian, also known as Kanga, is a hall of fame surfer who was the driving force in establishing what today is the world professional surfing circuit and in particular the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour. Ian is the current US Surfing team head coach, which recently celebrated winning the Gold Medal at the 2011 International Surfing Association Word Championships.
First up, on Saturday night the 28th of January at 7:00 PM, we will be screening Bustin' Down The Door the award winning 2008 Surf Movie that follows the rise of Australia as a Surfing Super Power breaking the previous stranglehold of Hawaiian Surfers on the professional Surfing circuit. The film follows a group of young surfers from Australia and South Africa, including Shaun Tomson, Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew, Ian Cairns, Mark Richards, Michael Tomson, and Peter Townend, as they relocate to Hawaii encountering obstacles, turf wars, and massive wipeouts along the way. Immediately following the movie we will feature a Question & Answer session with Kanga himself. Check out a preview of the movie below.
The following day on Sunday the January 29th there will be on the free on the water demo day with Ian from 9:00 to 3:00 PM featuring the innovative new line up of OZO Stand Up Paddleboards. Cairns will be on hand letting the public try out the OZO boards while providing tips on SUP technique both for flat water stand up paddling as well as surfing. Ian's Ozo boards are light, easy to maneuver, and are one of the most forgiving boards on the market. We have a limited number of Demo Boards available, so reservations are highly recommended. First time Stand Up Paddlers are welcome, actually encouraged, to come on down and try the exciting new sport of Stand Up Paddling (SUP).
Stand Up Paddling is the fastest growing water sport in the world currently and is great for overall fitness. You can race, ride waves, or just go for a cruise. Here is an excellent chance for you to try SUP under the guidance of living legend and surf icon Ian Cairns. Ian along with the staff at 101 Surf Sports will be giving a short intro course to those of you that have never tried the sport of Stand Up Paddling before.
Special package pricing will be made available to those wanting to purchase OZO Stand Up Paddleboards with paddles during the event.

Logistical Information for Sunday's Free Stand Up Paddling Demo Day.
- Apparel - what to wear: Check the forecast, if it's cold you may want to wear a wetsuit. While we do have wetsuits & booties for sale we currently do not have any rental or loaner suits available. In general wetsuits are not needed for Stand Up Paddling on flat water and if it's mid 60's you can get away with board shorts and/or Lycra or Polyester clothing (like Biking Apparel or Rash Guards). Cotton based clothing should be avoided. Please consult the forecast ahead of time to determine what to wear. Please do consider bringing booties, as the water is mid 50's and your toes may get cold. If the sun is out hats are recommended for sun protection – even in winter.
-In the event of rain or bad weather we will still run the event, please dress appropriately for the weather, i.e. wetsuit and hat.
- What to bring – Sunscreen & Food. We are located in easy walking distance from the Whole Foods and Trader Joes super markets just down the street if you need to pick up a snack before or after. Water will be provided on site during the event.

- Where to park- Our San Rafael location has quite a bit of parking available on a first come first serve basis. Should the lot be full please feel free drop off your stuff off and then either park on the street, or at San Rafael High School (185 Mission St, San Rafael) directly across the street from the shop.
- How the Stand Up Paddling demo day works – RSVP is available for the 20 demo slots available at any given time. Please call ahead to 415-524-8492 to reserve your spot. After all RSVP slots have been fulfilled the Demo's will be available on a first come first serve basis. When you arrive on site we will have a sign-up sheet available for you to book your spot. In order to ensure your spot we highly encourage you sign up early to take advantage of this opportunity.

-The Movie screening will start promptly at 7pm. Please feel free to come in early to meet Ian. The movie runs about 95 minutes so should wrap up by 8:35 with a Q&A session immediately following. The event is indoors so will be held rain or shine.
