What To Wear When The Pool Is Cold?

What to wear in a cold swimming pool.

What to wear in a cold swimming pool.

Looking for the perfect gear to wear for exercise in the pool when it just gets too cold? Well we are here to help with a broad selection of gear that will help your swim or aqua aerobics workouts be warm ones.

Great ideas for stuff to wear in a cold pool

Swimming and Aqua Aerobics or Aqua Fitness programs are some of the best ways to workout. No impact and great cardio make these parts of the best exercise programs out there. One challenge however can be staying warm in the pool. The answer quite simply is neoprene. Not necessarily a wetsuit but rather a workout garment made from the very same material but with a few key features;

  • Thinner neoprene we recommend 1-2 mm for pool wear, not too floaty
  • Front Zippers which are great for helping regulate getting too warm
  • A snug fit
  • Two piece combos (pant +jacket)

The jacket is most certainly the first thing to get. But adding pants and neoprene beanies can keep you toasty warm in the pool. The good news with these two piece solutions is just how easy they are to get on and off. No wrestling with a wetsuit just slide them on and off like clothes.

The perfect jacket to wear in the pool the O'Neill Bahia

A couple of garments we really like

  • The O’Neill Bahia Jacket for Women (starting @ $85 pictured at right)
  • The O’Neill Reactor Jacket for Men
  • The Farmer John ($105 pictured top right)
  • SUPreme Neoprene Shorts or Pants
  • Neoprene Beanies

Always make sure to rinse your neoprene garment after getting out of the pool and let it drip dry. Chlorine and Bromine can really breakdown the material over time. Check out our complete wetsuit owners manual here for more tips and tricks to keep your neoprene in top shape.

If you are swimming laps we recommend the farmer john style. This will maximize your mobility while keeping you warm – but not too warm. If you are really a cold person than a spring suit or even a full suit can be the answer. Remember as you add neoprene you add incremental floatation as well.

We carry a large selection, and trying these garments on is a must do. A snug fit is the key to warmth and performance. A loose garment will not keep you nearly as warm and is a really bummer when it's flopping around during your work out.
