Congratulations Marion Lepert - Olympian!
The Rio Olympic games have wrapped up and we are proud to welcome home Olympic Windsurfer, and San Francisco Bay Area local Marion Lepert. Marion represented our local fleet with class and turned in a solid performance.
This Olympic Games really had the internet viewing thing down cold. We spent our days watching the windsurfing, sailing, and canoe/kayak events all streamed live. Day one started off with a roar for Marion. Putting up a 10-3-10 scoring line that had her in the hunt for a medal at the close of day 1. That 3rd place finish must have been a major life highlight for the young Stanford Student. Ending the day in the top 10 of the Olympic Games must have been an intense feeling.
Day two saw an unfortunate spell of bad luck with Marion getting off a great start only to see the Brazilian sailor drop her rig right in front of her knocking her straight to the back of the pack. Rumors had the fleet being sent to the outside course on day 3. This would have been a huge advantage for Marion who excels when the wind is up. The outside course had been consistently windier and was forecast to blow hard. For reasons that make no sense they sent the small boats to the outside course and kept the windsurfers on the inside. In summary a major let down by the race committee.
With medal hopes pushed out of reach Marion hunkered down for a solid result. The best result by an American woman since the 1980's! With Windsurfing's Olympic future not certain we hope that Marion keeps on sailing. Congratulations again Marion - way to represent.
