Records Fall At 4th Annual Terrapin Crossroads Paddle Race
Appropriately it was “record” day at the 4th annual Terrapin Crossroads Long Strange Trip. While this year was long it was anything but strange with literally ideal conditions making for record breaking times in many divisions.(all photos Ron Steinau)
The day dawned chilly with nary a breath of air on the course. Including the three six man outrigger canoes it was 91 people taking to the course for 13 miles of paddle racing action. With OC1, OC2, Surfski and Double Surfski, Stand up Paddleboards, Prone Paddleboards, and Sea Kayaks there was a little something for everyone. As the race started the fleet took off with 2 knots of flood tide on the stern and mirror flat water over most of the course.
There was of course the pre requisite voodoo water just as the fleet exited Fort Baker that made a few folks test the water. As the group rounded the point at Kiel Cove to turn for home, a 5-8 mph South South East Wind added a little push to help them get there. With all that push from behind we saw new course records in almost all divisions.(pictured below the He'e Nalu 6 man outrigger canoes flying off the starting line)
The day simply would not have been possible without the support of our on the water safety team. First up is San Francisco Bay Stand Up Paddleboard Tour Operator the Barbary Ghost whose able Grand Banks 32 made everyone feel right as rain only it wasn't raining. Marcel Houtzager and Mark Guelfi (with Alan Romero on the wheel) offered up the services of their Protector’s to make for quick response help if anyone needed it. Mark Heedon and the San Rafael Police Department put two boats on the water for the day making sure the fleet all made it to the finish line. Of course a special thanks has to go to our event sponsors. (pictured below the first three finishers separated by 1 second a piece. As usual we implore you to support the businesses that support our sport and nobody gave as big as title sponsor Terrapin Crossroads. Serving up gift cards for all the first place finisher we know there will be some satiated winners with some of the best dining in San Francisco Bay. Throw in the killer tunes and waterside location and Terrapin rocks – literally. Thanks as well to event photographer Ron Steinau for all the nice pictures.(Pictured Below Bojan Benard taking 6 minutes off his own record! Second Place Grant Mcfadyen is just behind BB.)

Whole Foods Market was in on the action setting up an insane lunchtime spread. Need pies for the Holidays? Make it a Mamie’s Pie and make sure to saddle up some Three Twins Ice Cream to make for some happy pie. Kind Bar and Hint water were available to all in never ending supplies. After over two hours of paddling you are going to have some thirsty paddlers and that’s where Marin Brewing Company did their thing. New sponsors this year are the Fruit Guys and they have quickly become a crowd favorite. You too can have this tasty fruit delivered right to your house with their handy home or office delivery. O'neill Wetsuits gave big at the prize table with SWAG for all - THANKS O'NEILL!!!
Thanks to all the volunteers and of course thanks to all who paddled. Our next race is a fundraiser for the Skin Cancer Foundation on January 23rd right here at the shop. Click Here For Information
