101 Surf Sports Stand Up Paddleboarding and Kayaking on San Francisco Bay

Redwood City Paddle Race November 11th 2019

As the paddlers pulled in to the parking lot it was clear that it wasn't going to be clear. A dense marine layer hovered tightly over the race course creating a flat gray dizzying two dimensional scene.

This was the first race of the season in our Redwood City location and the highlight of the day was definitely the grom power. A gaggle of the Santa Cruz Junior Lifeguards made the trek over the hill to race prone paddleboards and were joined by a few of the locals on stand up. A special atta boy to Isiah Hollis who not only won the prone paddleboard division but also showed his waterman dna is deeper than the race course offering to check up on some paddlers at the back of the pack.

If paddlesports had the equivalent to a pilots instrument rating today was the day to be a pilot. We ran our standard long course starting at Westpoint Harbor going out and around the 5 and 6 Pilings than returning to finish inside the harbor. Our normal 2.2 mile short course was extended a mile and saw the fleet going out to piling 9 and back.

We had delayed the start 15 minutes to let the fog burn off but the best any racer could do was find the next piling and stay focused on their line. Any day-dreaming resulted in a disorienting route the left you second guessing where you were. Thankfully the Redwood City race course we use for these types of days is litterally a bread crumb trail of markers that make racing possible in these types of conditions.

Surfski racing at Redwood City

The fog burned off just after the last paddlers got off the water. So under blue skies we ate pizza, gave away some hats, and then called it a day.

We were hapy to see such a wide variety of paddle craft. The kayaks, surfski, prone paddleboards, outrigger canoes, and stand up paddleboards made for a potpourri of paddle sports. A special nod of thanks to our largest ever inflatable stand up paddleboard division of which we'd love to see more. These inflatable boards are fast and showing they are for real on the race course.

Special thanks to Westpoint Harbor for such an incredible venue. And of course our usual gratitude is showered upon Hint Water for all the great hydration. Please remember to support the businesses that support our sport.

Our racing season runs all winter long with some some more good times ahead.
