101 Surf Sports Stand Up Paddleboarding and Kayaking on San Francisco Bay

Stand Up Paddleboard Racing in Redwood City

We could not have asked for a nicer set up for our inaugural Redwood City Paddle Race. Blue skies, 73 degree temperature, and a windless San Francisco Bay made for a fun day of racing.(pictured the front of the fleet gets off the starting line)

With a multitude of craft including Stand Up Paddleboards, Surfski, Sea Kayaks, and Outrigger Canoes we decided to go for one group start. Given our much larger space at Wespoint Harbor their is a lot more room to spread out for one mass start. (pictured below the racers ready for action)

Stand Up Paddleboard Racing in Redwood City

Racing featured two new courses that you can see at the bottom of this article. The 2 mile short course does a nice peek-a-boo in to San Francisco Bay before returning to Westpoint Harbor. The 6 mile course turned out to be more like 5 miles but was such a solid course it will likely be our go to course. (pictured below Grom Alex Campbell laying down the hammer at the finish line)

Before racing commenced we had a remembrance for our fallen friend Filip Andersson. Filip was a huge part in getting the Redwood City location built out. Filip had also registered for the Redwood City race before his passing. While we had a nice Surfski turnout, and with all due respect to today's winner John Green, I am certain Filip would have won this race. As such we recorded his time accordingly.

team river runner

We took a moment to hear from Team River Runner. Team River Runner supports programs to help wounded and disabled veterans. One way Team River Runner helps is by inviting wounded and disabled war veterans and their families to participate in adaptive paddling programs. Check out a bit more about them by clicking on the logo. (pictured above a racers eye view of the starting line courtesy Focus SUP ambassador Kate Carpenter)

We have to start our thank yous with our new host. Mark Sanders, of Westpoint Harbor. Mark has poured a life and half's worth of passion in to the harbor and it shows in the amazing surroundings. We could not be more lucky to paddle here.

Special thanks to our partners Hint Water and Kind Bar. Kinds new pressed fruit bars were a big hit and rinsed down well with all the new flavors of Hint Water. The day wrapped up with some terrific suds courtesy the team at 101 North Brewing.

Thanks to all the volunteers who pitched in to help as well as everyone who paddled.

Coast Guard Foundation

Next up is the October 29th SUP Run Championships followed by our November 12th Charity Paddle Race both of which are hosted in our San Rafael location. We have chosen the Coast Guard Foundation as our benefiting charity to honor the wishes of Filip Andersson. Paddle on and see you on the water.
