101 Surf Sports Stand Up Paddleboarding and Kayaking on San Francisco Bay

beaver moon SUP TOUR

Ever paddle under a Beaver Moon? Well here is your big chance as 101 Surf Sports rolls out 4 new Stand Up Paddleboard Tours for winter paddling on San Francisco Bay.

While it may be a bit cooler paddling is actually better in the winter time.  Mirror like water conditions that are unheard of in San Francisco Bay's normal summer conditions are quite normal all fall and winter long. While we do recommend some more robust apparel it's nothing you probably don't have in your closet already.

New for the schedule are 4 opportunities to get your winter paddle on.

Tuesday October 27th 6pm - Hunters Moon Stand Up Paddleboard and Kayak Tour - More Information

Friday October 30th - Barbary Ghost Sunset Ride The Tide Tour - More Information

Sunday November 1st - Barbary Ghost Angel Island Paddle Picnic - More Information

Wednesday November 25th 6pm - Beaver Moon Stand Up Paddleboard Tour - More Information

The best attire is based on synthetics Nylon, Spandex, Polyester. And for these trips one may consider a layer of Neorprene - aka wetsuits. 1 to 2 milimeters should get the job done. Light neoprenen booties for the feet may also be a good call ; particularly for Novembers Beaver Moon Paddleboard Tour. Long synthetic leggings - running, biking, yoga along with a synthetic fleece top are good. Perhaps a lightweight shell and a beanie if you run on the colder side.

What is a Hunters Moon? The full moon that appears in October is called the Hunters Moon. The first moon after the Harvest Moon is the Hunters Moon, so named as the preferred month to hunt summer-fattened deer and fox unable to hide in now bare fields. Like the Harvest Moon, the Hunters Moon is also particularly bright and long in the sky, giving hunters the opportunity to stalk prey at night. Probably because of the threat of winter looming close, the Hunters Moon is generally accorded with special honor, historically serving as an important feast day in both Western Europe and among many Native American tribes.

What is a Beaver Moon? The full moon that appears in November is called the Beaver Moon. There is disagreement over the origin of November’s beaver moon name. Some say it comes from Native Americans setting beaver traps during this month before the swamps froze to ensure a supply of warm winter furs. Other say that the Beaver Moon comes from the heavy activity of beavers building their winter dams.
